She began her career as a child singing Gospel in her father's church until she was 18 and decided to switch to a secular music career. She has often received great accolade for being a great singer and musician due to her vocal prowess and skillfull piano playing. Her voice has been described as being a powerful mezzo-soprano voice.
Aretha has won 18 Grammy Awards, sold 75 million records worldwide, she has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the first woman to be inducted), Uk Music Hall of Fame, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, she has received a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame, she has a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Grammy Legend Award, Presidential Medal of Freedom and many more.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston aka The Voice born August 9 1963 was an American singer, actress, producer and model. Just like her honorary aunt Aretha Franklin she started her career in church and later switched to secular music. Whitney has one of the greatest and most-poweful voice in music, she has a mezzo-soprano voice that is rich, stong middle belt that very few people have.
According to Guiness World Record she is the most awarded female act of all time, she is also one of the best selling music artist of all time with 200 million records sold worldwide and all seven studio albums and two soundtrack albums she released all have diamond, multi-platinum,platinum, or gold certification.
She has also had on-screen successes as an actress. Her first acting dubut was as Rachel Marron in the critically acclaimed movie "The Body Guard", she performed two chart topping songs for the movie "I will always love you" and "I have nothing" with the former winning a Grammy for record of the year and becoming the best selling single by a woman in history. Other movies she acted in are "Waiting to Exhale", "The Precher's Wife" and "Sparkle".
On February 11 2012 she was found dead from Drowning due to drug intoxication in a Beverly Hills hotel but her lagacy forever lives on

Tina Turner aka Queen of Rock and Roll born Anna Mae Bullock on Novermber 26 1939 is an American born Swiss singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and author. Like most singers she started singing in local church choirs but rose to prominence as a featured singer with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm before recording hit songs as a solo artist and with Ike Turner. She is well known for her energetic and powerful stage presence, strong vocals and career longevity. She has sold over 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best selling artists of all time and according to Guiness world records she has sold more concert tickets than any other solo performer in history.
Throughout her career she has won 12 Grammy Awards, including eight competitive awards,  three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she has a star on the Hollywood Hall of Fame and the St.Louis Walk of Fame.
As an actress she starred opposite Mel Gibson in the 1985 movie "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome which received generally posistive reviews and she won NAACP image Award for her role in the film. As an Author she published her memoir "I, Tina" which became a best seller, it detailed her life story as a girl born in Tennessee to her rise to fame and her abusive relationship with ex-husband  Ike Turner. A movie adaptation of the book nwas released titled "What's Love Got To Do With It" starring Angela Bassett as Tina and Laurence Fishburne as Ike.

4. Ella Fitzgerald



Ella Jane Fitzgerald aka First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz born April 25 1917 was an American Jazz singer. She learnt her earliest experiences in music making and piano playing in church. She was well known for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation and a "horn-like improvistational abilty. In her lifetime she won fourteen Grammy Awards, National Medal of Arts, Presidential Medal of Freedom.
She has had successes starring in movies, with her most notable role being singer Maggie Jackson in 1955 film "Pete Kelly's Blues" her performance in the movie was recieved positively. After this movie she made cameos in movies like "Let No Man Write My Epitaph", St. Louise Blues and she appeared in television drama "The White Shadow".
Ella suffered from Diabetes for many years of her later life which led to several complications. She was hospitalised in 1985 for respiratory problems, congestive heart failure in 1986, exhaustion in 1990. In 1993 both of her legs were amputated due to the effect of Diabetes, her eyesight was affected as well. She died in her home on June 15 1996 at the age of 79.
She has influenced artists such as Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Michael Buble, Gladys Knight.

5. Nina Simone



Nina Simone aka Queen of Classical music, High Priestess of Soul, born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933 was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Her voice has been described has being a powerful contralto voice ( A type of classical female singing voice whose vocal range is the lowest female voice type). Nina has often been applauded for her theatrical stage presence, on stage, she incorporated monologues and dialogues with the audience into the program and often used silence as a musical element.
Nina was a recepient of a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, she received two honorary degrees in music and humanities from Amherst College and Malcolm X College, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Nina died from breast cancer on April 21, 2003 in France.

6. Janis Joplin



Janis Lyn Joplin aka Queen of Rock born on January 19, 1943 was an American rock singer and songwriter. She rose to fame as a lead singer of Rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. After releasing two albums with the band, she left to become a solo artist with her own backing groups.  Janis is popularly known for her unique, prominent coarsness to the voice, with a throaty and gutteral chest voice, she was highly respected for her charismatic performing ability. Audience and critics referred to her stage presence as "electric". 

In 1995 she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she has sold over 15.5 million albums worldwide, she has a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Grammy Hall of Fame.
Janis died at 27 on October 4 1970 due to Heroin Overdose

Etta James aka Queen of Blues, born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938 was an American singer who performed in various genre, including R&B, Soul, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Rock n Roll.

Etta has a powerful, deep, earthy, unique voice that bridged the gap between Rock n Roll and RnB. She is also famous for her well written, emotional songs.  Etta has won six Grammy Awards, 17 Blues Music Awards, she was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. In all she has received over thirty awards in her lifetime.
Etta died at 73 on January 20, 2012 from Alzheimer's Disease.

8. Diana Ross



Diana Ernestine Ross aka Queen of Motown born March 26 1944 is an American singer, songwriter, actress and record producer. She rose to fame as the lead singer of the vocal group "The Supremes" which became the best charting girl group in US history. She departed from the group in 1970 and also released her debut solo album that same year.
Diana's voice can be described as a light lyric soprano with three octaves, her voice is sweet, soft and youthful.
Diana also ventured into acting, with a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated performance for her role in Lady Sings the Blues in 1972, she also satrred in  Mahogany in 1975 and The Wiz 1978. She later acted in television films Out of Darkness 1994 and Double Platinum 1999. In 1988 she was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame alongside her Supremes members, In 2016 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She is a 12 time Grammy nominee, but nerver earning one in the competitive category but got the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
